Preparing Your Belongings for Storage in Jordan: A Practical Guide

Amman and Madaba’s climate works in your favor for storage — hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, without the extreme humidity that damages goods in coastal regions. But climate alone doesn’t protect your belongings; how you prepare items before they leave your home matters just as much. Here’s how to get five common categories ready.

  1. Furniture

Disassemble large pieces where you can — legs off tables, shelving broken into panels — to make packing easier and reduce stress on joints over a long storage period. Wrap upholstered and wood pieces in protective covers, and label each disassembled part so reassembly is simple later.

  2. Household Goods

Kitchenware, small appliances, and household items should be clean and completely dry before packing — residual moisture sealed inside a box is what leads to mold, not the storage environment itself. Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or packing paper, and use rigid plastic bins or reinforced cardboard rather than boxes that collapse under stacking.

  3. Clothing

Launder and fully dry clothing before packing — even light body oils or detergent residue can attract pests or yellow fabric over months of storage. Breathable garment bags work better than sealed plastic, and silica gel packets inside boxes help manage humidity swings between seasons.

  4. Valuables and Collectibles

Wrap antiques, artwork, or collectibles in acid-free tissue paper and bubble wrap to protect against scratching. It’s also worth photographing valuable items and keeping a written inventory before storage — useful for insurance if you ever need it.

  5. Electronics

Back up your data and remove batteries before storing any device, since leaking batteries are one of the most common causes of damage in long-term storage. Original manufacturer packaging is ideal if you still have it; otherwise, use a rigid case designed for the specific device.
